Dr. Paul Twiss has published a new book, Seeing the Goodness of God: Jacob, Joseph, and the Eyes of Faith, with Reformation Heritage Books.
Twiss is an associate professor of Old Testament at The Master’s Seminary. His new book surveys the story of Jacob and his sons in Genesis 37–50, highlighting God’s sovereign goodness throughout the Joseph narrative.
Twiss said, “The narrative of Jacob and his family provides a resounding conclusion to the book of Genesis. The creation narrative boasts of God’s goodness. Even after so much sin, at the end of the book, His goodness still persists. The story of Joseph and his brothers instructs us how to believe in this reality and live in light of it.”
Twiss spent nearly four years studying these chapters as part of his doctoral research before turning his attention to applying that research for a broader audience.
“I wanted to take the work I had done at an academic level and apply it at a lay level,” Twiss said. “The Joseph narrative gives us a rich theology of God’s providence. We love these chapters because of how they teach us to live under the Lord’s gracious reign.”
Through Joseph’s story, Twiss encourages readers to see their own lives through the eyes of faith, trusting that God is at work for their good even when His purposes are hidden. The book invites readers to consider how the Lord’s providence shapes their own experiences of suffering and uncertainty.
Twiss said, “I hope readers will better understand Genesis 37-50 and even the book of Genesis. I hope they will marvel at the Lord’s providence and trust in it more—that with Joseph they could say ‘God meant it for good’ (Gen. 50:20).”
